You have the second test on October 7th.
The test is on the last 4 regions in Japan (Kinki, Chugoku, Shikoku, Kyushu).
Test questions are made from:
1. Video transcripts: I emailed the transcripts for the introductory videos on each region. If you didn't know that, please check my email sent on Tue 9/9/2008 8:27 PM.
2. My post on the class blog: It was posted on Tuesday, August 26, 2008, titled "Islands and regions of Japan." Memorize at least the names of the islands, names of regions, and names of the major cities of each region.
3. I just combined the information from the 4 presentations from last week. I will send it on the word file today (9/30). I'll make test questions from this, too.

Umizaru 2
Umizaru 2 was a wonderful tale of friendship, love and devotion, not to mention bravery. At first I was skeptical as to how good a movie could be about a ferry sinking, but as the movie progressed I was drawn further into the spirit of the movie. By the end I can honestly say they I was able to feel exactly what the writer intended the actors to portray. Also the little twist at the end was amazing. I love how the director gave us a scene of complete tragedy and then all of a sudden introduced hope. I'd say all in all its probably one of the best dramas that I have seen this year.

Japanese Film Festival
As I told you in the last class, you don't have to come to the classroom.
Instead, you have to attend the Japanese film festival.
The room for the film festival is finally decided... sorry for announcing this so late.
The place is CHHS 155. Please come there a little before 5pm.
I'll be checking attendance in front of the room. Also, please turn in the first comparative paper there.
Also, please post your short movie review on the class blog, maybe a paragraph-long review is fine. (*Movie reviews count 5% of your total grade, so you really need to come see the movie.)
Also, the following week, some people will do their presentation on the assigned regions in Japan. Please don't forget about that and be prepared.
Also, the people who just registered the class and haven't belong to any presentation group, please let me explain a little there before the movie starts.

Adult Diaper Show Coming Soon
http://www.asahi.com/english/Herald-asahi/TKY200809030050.html
I honestly thought this was a joke at first. But no its really going to happen. What's worse I think is the fact that it has happened before, AND there is an adult diaper museum? Clearly someone has too much time on their hands. To top it all off the idea of sketches just makes it seem like a bad infomercial.

Aso plans candidacy to succeed Fukuda
http://www.asahi.com/english/Herald-asahi/TKY200809020387.html
Japanese prime minister resigned again.
I think Japanese people's attitudes toward politics are kinda different from Americans'.
American people's view on politics looks more enthusiastic to me.
On the other hand Japanese people are more uninterested in politics.
Probably that's because people feels like... nothing would change anyway.
Since the end of the WWII, almost always one party (Liberal Democratic Party) has been the governmental party. Then Japanese people might want to stay in the same situation, rather than risking on a change. So, those Japanese who doesn't have a particular party to support just don't go voting.
My impression is that Americans who doesn't have a particular party to support still decide to vote a candidate. Maybe that's why American elections seems enthusiastic and active.

9月2日2008年 Emergency Drilling
http://www.asahi.com/english/Herald-asahi/TKY200809020058.html
It seems that the Japanese government in the Wakayama prefecture has initiated an emergency drill off the coast of Japan to reduce tsunami related deaths caused by earthquakes.
It's estimated that when a tonankai earthquake occurs, 8,600 people could loose their lives.
It seems its only a matter of time before the next earthquake and they can only lessen the severity by drilling....therefore lives will be lost, its only a question of how many.
Hehe...I think moving far away from the coast would be a good idea!
